CP the buyer is too attached to that vehicle. The quirks he briefly mentions sound more like major repairs. With only two photos posted I would put $1 on the closer you get the worse the car becomes.

I like that TT design more than I should, but as an Mk4 Golf/Jetta, it remains one of the worst cars ever made.

Don’t be afraid.

I just sold one of these. Owned it for 6 years / 80k miles (145k miles when it sold). Mine was a Quattro 225 with the 6-speed, which is the more desirable of the various powertrain combinations.

Great car. Excellent daily driver. Comfortable, decent power, good fuel economy, huge hatchback opening. Much more interesting to look at versus a Golf/Jetta.

Most of the mechanical issues with these cars are very well known and documented and common to other VW/Audi’s of this era. Timing Belt / CV Joints / Coil Packs. These are the things that you will have to keep tabs on during routine maintenance and inspections. Everything else is just random shit you would have to deal with on any 15 year old car.

Is it a raw sports car like a Boxster? No. But I drove mine everyday (even in deep deep snow) and it never left me stranded. It had enough cargo for 2 adults and a weeks worth of camping gear. If you can find a factory roof rack (rare), it will accommodate a bike and a kayak or 2 bikes. I also used mine for Home Depot runs. The trunk will hold 9 bags of mulch. I had 30 6ft cedar boards for a privacy fence on it one time.

We can beat a dead horse and say used European cars are expensive to own and break down all the time. It’s not true here. Have the car inspected. Find an independent shop you can trust. Enjoy the ride.

Don’t be afraid.

After seeing the Wheeler Dealers on one of these, I’d pass. Unless it was half as expensive and you have a full shop available at your disposal.

An Audi from 2000 still runs?

What makes it such a terrible engine? Lack of power? Maintenance? Both?

I haven’t had a single problem with my Jetta’s 1.8T in 171,000 miles.

EDIT: 1 problem, MAF died. $150 repair.

Take care of it properly and it will run forever. Mine has 170,000 and has never had a major problem (unless you count replacing a MAF sensor a major problem). Power wise; adequate. It surprises my friends when I floor it every time, so there’s that. I abuse the car daily and it never lets me down.

You’re in a small minority friend. I actually have to diagnose a CEL on my friends ‘05 1.8T Passat soon.

Kinja'd!!!

This is the diagram for the valve cover breather. Can anyone explain why there are over THIRTY shitty plastic pieces involved? Basically the engine suffers from the same thing a lot of vag group engines suffer from, poor, over engineering that serves no purpose whatsoever, the use of plastic parts everywhere even the thermostat housing is plastic, and on top of all that its in a hard to access package. Ever heard of the service position? I love wrenching on my cars but this engine takes it way too far and it’s not like it pushes out some magical unobtainable power figure or even gets good mileage.

Interesting, and very good to be aware of.

That does seem to be a plague among anything from the VAG group - classical German Engineering™.

Agreed. The only post audi merger I have good things to say about is the 2.8 vr6. Not a bad little 6 but fwd so not for me. I also wouldn’t mind owning an awd w8 just for the experience but I still wouldn’t recommend it for someone who doesn’t do their own work.
